About Kaplan Centre

Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies and Research was established in 1980 and is situated in Rachel Bloch House. The centre is named in honour of the parents of Mendel and Robert Kaplan. It aims to promote the field of Jewish studies and research at the University with emphasis on the South African Jewish community.

Kaplan Centre Bursaries

The Kaplan Centre is now accepting applications for bursary for research, students or potential students of courses focused on the Jewish experience and/or Hebrew Language and Literature. The bursary only covers fees and tuition, running costs, travel and/or any other expenses related to an approved research project at UCT. Applicants are encouraged to find other sources of funding which is to be indicated on their application form.

Bursaries are renewable and will depend on the one-page progress report from the applicant and a letter of support from the supervisor/s of the activity in question.

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

  • Students of courses focused on the Jewish experience and/or Hebrew Language and Literature
  • Registered at the University of Cape Town
  •  

How to Apply and Application Details

  1. Download and complete the appropriate bursary application form:
  2. Accompany your applications with the following documents:
    • Undergraduate:
      • CV
      • Academic transcript
      • Proof of acceptance to the relevant study/research programme at the University of Cape Town
      • At least two testimonials from persons familiar with the applicant’s work. Testimonials must be sent under confidential cover by the referees directly to the Centre.
      • Brief letter of motivation
    • Postgraduate/Research Grant:
      • CV
      • Academic transcript
      • Proof of acceptance to the relevant study/research programme at the University of Cape Town
      • At least two testimonials from persons familiar with the applicant’s work. Testimonials must be sent under confidential cover by the referees directly to the Centre.
      • Itemised budget
      • Two-page research proposal as well as brief timeline of the proposed research.
