ABOUT THE COMPANY – CANON COLLINS, WITS | IEJ

The Canon Collins Trust has been running scholarship programmes since 1981, for students from southern African countries. The Trust has supported over 4 000 scholars, from 14 countries and today the Trust offers undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for study in South Africa, the UK, Ireland and Malawi.

The University of the Witwatersrand, better known and WITS, is a public research university located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The University is internationally recognised for its excellent research, commitment to social justice in Africa and its high academic standards.

ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS WITS ECONOMIC JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) and the Institute of Economic Justice (IEJ), is inviting students to apply for scholarship funding for the 2023 academic year..

Scholarships will be awarded to exceptional students who intend to pursue social justice in Southern Africa. The scholarship will cover studies towards a Masters of Commerce in Applied Development Economics qualification at the University of the Witwatersrand (students can find out more about the Masters in Applied Development Economics (ADE) here).

The scholarship award is funded by the Sol Plaatje Educational Project (SPEP) and aims to financially assist students who require a postgraduate qualification in order to work towards economic justice and promoting equitable economic development that results in socio-economic rights for all. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to increase their networks and leadership skills by way of organised events, and a paid internship at the Institute of Economic Justice. Scholarship recipients will be required to apply for the Wits University Postgraduate Merit Award.

MORE ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS WITS ECONOMIC JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE | SELECTION

The scholarship will provide cover to the value of R60 000 per year, towards the cost of your studies, for the entire duration of your qualification.

The final awarding of the scholarship will be dependent on 2 factors: getting accepted to WITS for the Masters of Commerce in Applied Development Economics course, and applying and satisfying the criteria for the WITS Postgraduate Merit Award. However, the following factors are also considered by making the selection: commitment to strengthening economic justice in Southern Africa, academic merit, financial need and leadership potential.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application during October 2022 – this correspondence will be sent via email. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview between October and November 2021, and thereafter, final successful applicants will be informed in December 2021.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CANON COLLINS WITS ECONOMIC JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a national of South Africa, Namibia or Zimbabwe
  • You must reside in South Africa, Namibia or Zimbabwe
  • You must intend on studying full-time towards a Masters of Commerce in Applied Development Economics
  • You must intend on studying at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2022
  • You must have completed an Honours level qualification and have achieved a minimum overall average of 75% OR you must be in the final year of Honours study in 2021
  • You must be committed to using your qualifications and skills to further social justice and promote equitable economic development that results in socio-economic rights
  • You must be willing and able to take part in a 6 month paid internship after completing your studies – the internship will take place at the Institute of Economic Justice, located in Johannesburg

Students must download and read the Canon Collins Scholarship for Economic Justice Guidelines (.pdf) before applying.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

  • ID document, Birth Certificate, Passport or Driver’s License (certified copy)
  • Degree certificates, if available (certified copy)
  • Academic transcripts (certified copy)
  • 2 latest payslips, if employed

Shortlisted candidates will also be required to submit 2 letters of reference, relating to your suitability for the scholarship (1 from your current or most recent academic supervisor AND 1 from your employer if employed or 1 from voluntary work if never been employed, or 2 academic references).
