What is a Learnership and how does it work?

A Learnership is an education and training programme, whereby students gain theoretical knowledge and practical working experience, which ultimately results in a registered qualification on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) on completion of the programme.

Learnership can be described as a training programme that consists of both theoretical and practical elements. The Training is done over a predetermined period for the purpose of developing specific skills or competencies.

Learnerships

The purpose of a Learnership is that students may gain practical working experience in the daily activities of an occupation, guided by a qualified and experienced person. Students are taught how and why certain tasks are done and have the theoretical knowledge to back it up.

Learnerships are paid positions, mainly for students whose highest qualification is Matric. Learnerships are generally made up of 1200 “notional” learning hours (or 120 credits) and students will be able to use their nationally recognised qualifications to find a job or pursue further studies in that specific field.
