ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – NETWERK24

Netwerk24 Scholarship South Africa | Netwerk24 is the Afrikaans news platform for one of South Africa’s largest online subscription news services: Media24. This news service has just under 100 000 digital subscribers and covers news nationwide, owing to its many offices located in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, and Gqeberha. The platform also has a wide span of journalists, covering areas such as the Northern and Southern Cape, Limpopo, and North West. Editors of Netwerk24 and Media24 serve many famous daily newspapers such as Die Burger, Volksblad, and Beeld, with Netwerk24 being the digital home of the Sunday newspaper Rapport and various community newspapers.

Online subscribers of Netwerk24 and Media24 can also get access to other digital magazines such as Sarie, Huisgenoot, Tuis, Kuier, Weg!, Baby & Toddler, and Weg! Drive & Drag.

ABOUT THE NETWERK24 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Netwerk24 is inviting students to apply for their scholarship program for the 2023 and 2024 academic years.

Scholarships will be awarded for Journalism or Communication studies (Undergraduate and Postgraduate), to students who wish to pursue a career in Afrikaans digital journalism.

Students from ANY other field of study may also be considered (such as Arts, Law, Economic and Management Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences).

MORE ABOUT THE NETWERK24 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – VALUE, SELECTION & OBLIGATION

2 scholarships will be awarded for the 2023 academic year, with the total value of R300 000:

  • 1 Undergraduate scholarship, for Bachelor’s degree or diploma studies, valued at R130 000
  • 1 Postgraduate scholarship, for Honors or master’s degree studies, valued at R170 000

The same 2 scholarships will be awarded for the 2024 academic year, with the total value of R300 000:

  • 1 Undergraduate scholarship, for Bachelor’s degree or diploma studies, valued at R130 000
  • 1 Postgraduate scholarship, for Honors or master’s degree studies, valued at R170 000

Netwerk24’s selection panel will receive all potential applications and shortlist successful candidates. During the selection process, shortlisted candidates’ language skills, news sense, communication skills, and general knowledge will be assessed. Thereafter, successful recipients of the scholarship award will be notified by the panel after their interview.

After graduation, scholars will be required to complete an internship, of no more than 1 year, within Netwerk24’s editorial departments. Thereafter, scholars will be required to fulfill a fixed-term contract for another year.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NETWERK24 SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to meet all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must have completed Matric
  • Undergraduate students: you must be in your final year of studies towards a Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma, preferably in Journalism or Communication studies
  • Postgraduate students: you must be completing an Honors or Master’s Degree, preferably in Journalism or Communication studies
  • You must be committed to working in Afrikaans
  • You must have excellent news sense
  • You must have excellent communication skills
  • You must have sound general knowledge
  • You must have excellent language skills

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE NETWERK24 SCHOLARSHIP

Students who meet all of the above criteria can apply by submitting clear copies of the following documentation (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate (certified copy)
  • Driver’s License (if applicable)
  • Latest academic record (on institutions letterhead)
  • Updated Curriculum Vitae
  • Motivational letter explaining why you want to work in journalism and how/ where you will be able to make a contribution (maximum 500 words)
  • Voluntary multimedia element (maximum of 1 minute) (advantageous)
