ABOUT THE GRANT PROVIDER – L’ORÉAL–UNESCO
UNESCO and the Fondation L’Oréal aim to recognise female researchers who have contributed to overcoming today’s global challenges.
The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Africa programme was launched in 2010 and has since supported over 150 young female scientists. The national programme dedicated to South Africa was launched in 2019.
ABOUT THE L’ORÉAL–UNESCO WOMEN IN SCIENCE GRANT
L’Oréal-UNESCO is inviting female students to apply for the Women in Science South Africa National Young Talents Programme, for the 2023 academic year.
The South African National Programme is for South African female scientists and is awarded for doctoral and post-doctorate studies in these scientific areas:
- Formal Sciences (Computer & Information Sciences, Mathematics)
- Physical Sciences (Chemistry, Physics)
- Life and Environmental Sciences (Agriculture Sciences, Basic Medicine, Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Earth & Related Environmental Sciences, Health Biotechnology, Health Sciences)
- Engineering Sciences and Technology (Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical; Electronic & Information Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, Material Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Engineering, Nanotechnologies)

MORE ABOUT THE L’ORÉAL–UNESCO WOMEN IN SCIENCE GRANT – GRANT VALUE & SELECTION
The South African National Programme awards funding to 6 female scientists each year. Grants will be awarded to the following values:
- Doctoral students: there will be 3 research grants awarded, to the value of R80 000 each
- Post-doctorate students: there will be 3 research grants awarded, to the value of R160 000 each

Applications will be reviewed by an expert panel and Jury in June 2022. The final selection of candidates will take place by the end of August 2022. Winners will be announced and the ceremony will take place in September 2022.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE L’ORÉAL–UNESCO WOMEN IN SCIENCE GRANT
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Doctoral students:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must enrol to study at a university in South Africa
- You must enrol to carry out your doctorate in a research laboratory in any of the 9 provinces
- You must be in the 2nd year of the thesis
- You must be conducting research in one of the scientific fields listed above
- You must NOT be currently supported by one of the national or regional L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science programmes
Post-doctorate students:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must enrol in a post-doctorate in a research laboratory or an institution in any of the 9 provinces
- You must have obtained a doctorate in one of the scientific fields listed above
- You must be conducting research in one of the scientific fields listed above
- You must have started the post-doctorate before the opening date of the grant (5 May 2022)
- You must NOT be currently supported by one of the national or regional L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science programmes
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE L’ORÉAL–UNESCO WOMEN IN SCIENCE GRANT
Applications must be submitted online at L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science South Africa Grant
Applicants are required to Register an Account before they can Login and apply.
* Applicants must download and read the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science South Africa National Young Talents Programme (.pdf) before applying.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- Detailed Curriculum, including; training, dissemination actions, commitments of the candidate, etc (1 to 2 pages)
- Tertiary qualifications completed (copies only)
- Summary of research work (to be read by a panel of scientific experts) (maximum 200 words)
- A detailed description of the research work and methodology, including the references (Text justified, Times New Roman font, size 12 with single spacing) (maximum 2 pages)
- Estimated budget detailing the expected expenditure to support the research work (budget must not be more than R80 000 for doctoral students and R160 000 for postdoctoral researchers – must be in a table indicating projected expenses)
- 2 or more letters of recommendation (assessing the quality of the CV, the originality of the project and mentioning the relationship and human dimensions of the candidate)
- List of the applicant’s publications (listed from the most recent to the oldest) (Doctoral students: the 2 publications published or in the process of being published. Post-doctoral students: 2 most important publications)
