ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – POP-KULTUR FESTIVAL & GOETHE-INSTITUT

The Goethe-Institut is a non-profit German cultural association operational worldwide with 159 institutes, promoting the study of the German language abroad and encouraging international cultural exchange and relations.

Pop-Kultur is an international festival taking place in Berlin, Germany each year. The festival is built around three elements: Live events (music performances, readings and film screenings); Talent program (Pop-Kultur Nachwuchs, which connects young talents from around the world with established artists); and Networking (which brings together key figures in the local and international creative industries in a casual setting).

The 2023 Pop-Kultur Festival will be the 8th time that Pop-Kultur and the Goethe-Institut are awarding scholarships to young musicians from the Global South, North Africa-West Asia (NAWA) and (Central) Asia. Students will have the opportunity to swap their home base for the musical metropolis of Berlin for twelve action-packed days.

ABOUT THE GOETHE TALENTS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Pop-Kultur Festival in cooperation with Goethe-Institut is inviting students to apply for the Goethe Talents Scholarship programme. The 2023 scholarship will take place in Berlin, Germany, from 24 August to 24 September 2023.

Scholarships will be awarded to young composers, singers, songwriters or instrumentalists from transitioning or developing countries, which includes South Africa (see the DAC List of ODA Recipients here).

Students will be engaged in a range of activities to experience the music scene in Berlin before the festival begins, through studio visits, intensive jam sessions, short traineeships in selected companies of Berlin’s creative industries, and listening sessions. Meetings will also be conducted with scholarship holders of Music board Berlin GmbH and former alumni of past Goethe Talents editions, visiting concerts and other activities.

MORE ABOUT THE GOETHE TALENTS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED & OTHER BENEFITS

The scholarship will provide cover for the following expenses: participation fee, accommodation, travel expenses, hospitality (per diem), and flights and will help with visa issues.

Scholars will also receive the following benefits:

  • Musicboard Berlin will provide a free festival ticket and access to Pop-Kultur’s networking area for professionals to all talents, organise accommodation (breakfast included), and cover health insurance and public transportation within Berlin.
  • The opportunity to network, with a focus on studio times, will give the selected participants the opportunity to engage in direct acoustic exchange in order to learn from and with each other.
  • Scholars will also join the Pop-Kultur Nachwuchs programme, from 30 August to 1 September in Berlin, where international professionals will give personal insights into their work and share knowledge through workshops, case studies and talks with participants.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GOETHE TALENTS SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be from a country within the Global South, the Middle East and (Central) Asia
  • You must be between the ages of 20 and 30 years old
  • You must be a musician, composer, singer-songwriter or instrumentalist
  • You must wish to work professionally in the music field or to make your musical talent more target-oriented
  • You must have work experience in the field of music, with proof of at least 3 projects you took part in
  • You must have Advanced English skills (at least a level B2 – find the English levels here and complete the FREE English proficiency test here

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE GOETHE TALENTS SCHOLARSHIP

SELECTION FOR THE GOETHE TALENTS SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarships will be awarded to 8 talented individuals from around the world, enabling them to network across borders. Participants will get a chance to perform on the Nachwuchs stage on one of the evenings of the Pop-Kultur Live programme. The organisers may also provide special nights for artists’ performances to a public audience.

An expert jury will choose 8 talents for the sought-after spots in the scholarship programme and will inform the applicants by the end of May 2023. The scholarship will then start on 24 August (arrival day) and end on 4 September (departure day).
