Information

There are two Science and Music Scholarships to be awarded annually. If the recipients maintain a high level of academic achievement, the award will be granted for up to three years. Applicants should be all round achievers with a strong interest and aptitude for music performance and science.

These scholarships will be awarded to a boy and a girl graduating from Southland Boys’ High School and Southland Girls’ High School who intend to pursue degrees and careers in science. They will reward talented musicians and emerging scientists who also demonstrate leadership and commitment to community, peers and family.

Elman is a son of the late Philip Poole, who was part of the early settler Poole family from England and a well-known cabinetmaker and musician in Invercargill in the 1920s. Elman studied at Southland Boys’ High School and the University of Otago, from which he graduated with a degree in Medicine in 1944. Elman specialised in Neurology with scholarships at Oxford University and posts in London at the Institute of Psychiatry and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases. After a Rockefeller Fellowship to the Mayo Clinic, he returned to the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford where he has now retired. His brother Alfred also qualified in medicine and played an important part in healthcare in Invercargill.

These scholarships were established by Dr Elman Poole in 2013.

Applicants must :

have been a Southland resident for three or more years
attend either Southland Boys’ or Southland Girls’ High School in the year of application
excel in Science and intend to enrol in a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science degree, with a preference for Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry. Students intending to enrol in the Health Sciences First Year course are not eligible to receive this scholarship
have a talent for musical performance, either instrumental or vocal
