Earthchild Project seeks to appoint an Environmental Programme Facilitator, based in Lavender Hill, Cape Town. Using experiential learning, our environmental education programme inspires children to connect with and learn about nature, and empowers them with life skills such as food gardening, teamwork, leadership and communication. Ultimately, we aim to develop future environmental leaders who become changemakers in their communities.

Background

Founded in 2007, Earthchild Project (ECP) operates in under-resourced schools in Cape Town. We aim to nurture and inspire resilient Earthchildren who are deeply connected to and take positive action for themselves, the environment and their communities. Our holistic education programmes focus on life skills, wellness and the environment, working with teachers, children and youth.

ECP works across eight primary schools in Khayelitsha and Lavender Hill, reaching over 3500 children and 80 teachers every week. We run a variety of programmes including yoga, worm farming, eco clubs, leadership training, holiday programmes, camps and teacher training.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Living Classroom Worm Farming lessons
  • Facilitate the Eco-Warriors extra-mural club
  • Assist in organising and co-facilitating monthly Eco-Explorers day hikes and camps
  • Undertake the necessary planning and preparation for each activity including recruitment, resource management, liaising with stakeholders, transport, catering, uniforms, and communication with the Green Team
  • Undertake the required M&E and administration, including obtaining permits, attendance registers, report writing and managing petty cash
  • Assist in organising and facilitating Holiday Programmes, Camps and other events
  • Attend team meetings, trainings, workshops and events​

Requirements​

  • Completed a certificate programme or course in environmental education
  • At least 2 years’ experience in teaching environmental education to children/youth groups
  • Excellent facilitator with an ability to mentor children and facilitate their learning and growth
  • Experience in working in the development sector and within a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar etc.)

  • Relationship management skills

Advantageous

  • Experienced in leading hikes and have a passion for hiking
  • Residing in or near Lavender Hill
  • Fluent in Afrikaans
