The National Student Financial Aid Plan is a government support scheme for South African students which offers financial support to deprived undergraduate learners to pay for the cost of their tertiary education after completing high school. The Department of Higher Education and Training is funded by the  Department of Higher Education and Training.

In 1996, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme was launched, substituting South Africa’s Tertiary Education Fund (TEFSA) in 1999.  The TEFSA program was non-profit company that, from its inception until 2000, managed and administered NSFAS.
