NSFAS Balance

As the NSFAS scheme continues to garner popularity as a major funding organization for students in need of financial assistance, more and more students are rushing in to register under the scheme. This causes a lot of excitement and a lot of questions. You can often hear students asking; “how do I check my NSFAS balance?”

Students who have registered for the NSFAS scheme, who have had their applications approved, and who therefore qualify to receive allowances directly from NSFAS will receive cash funds in their NSFAS Wallets. If you have passed through the registration process, and you are sure that your application has been approved, this is where you find out how to check your balance/statement in your NSFAS account to see that you have received funds from the programme.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme provides students with an NSFAS wallet which the scheme funds directly. This wallet allows students at certain tertiary institutions, to withdraw cash or spend it at any NSFAS-registered merchant.

How to Check Your NSFAS Balance

There are several ways to check your NSFAS balance. To view your NSFAS Wallet cash balance (and transactions) one of the easiest ways is on your cell phone: you can check your NSFAS Statement/balance by using a simple USSD code that works regardless of what cell phone network you use. The system is called Sbux.

You can use the NSFAS Sbux method to check your NSFAS by following these simple steps:

  • Dial short code *134*176# and then press send.
  • The system will display a prompt for you to Enter your password.
  • Enter your Password and then press Send.
  • The system will display some options. Select option 2: ‘Query.’
  • The system will display your cash balance and transactions.

NSFAS Celbux – Check NSFAS Balance on the internet:

Another popular way that students check their NSFAS Sbux balance is by using the internet. This is popularly known as NSFAS Celbux. This method gives a clearer, more arraigned presentation of your NSFAS history, in a way that you can better understand.

You can use Celbux by following these simple steps.

Enter the following link into your browser https://celbux.appspot.com and then press enter.

The system will present a dialogue for you to log into your account by typing in your cell phone number and password. After doing so, just click the Login button.

The system will log you in, and present several options. Click the option that says ‘More.’

The system will then present several options; you just Click on ‘Transactions.’

The system now displays your transactions and your available balance.

Please Take Note:

Maintaining your cell phone number is vital to accessing your funds. Students must ensure that they have access to the cell phone number that they provided to NSFAS when registering for the scheme. This is especially important because that number will be used to deposit their funds.

If You have lost Your Cell-phone

If your contact details have changed then you may update your cell phone number. The system allows you to make these changes by yourself in a self-service manner. You will need to go online, preferably with a computer or tablet to do this update. If you have a personal computer with an internet connection then you can do this from home. Otherwise, you can do this from a public computer at an internet café.

The system will load a page for you to log in with your username and password.

Under the password box you will see a link that says ‘forgot password?’ click on it.

The system will bring up a page that says reset password. You type in your email address, and then click reset password.

The system will send you a link to your email. When you click that link you are automatically redirected to the page that lets you choose a new password. You will be asked to type it in twice. After that, the password is reset, and you can log in to the system with your new password.

Lost MyNSFAS, Email, and Cell-Phone?

We do not expect you to lose both your phone number and email address which are the key instruments of accessing your NSFAS account, but on the rare occasion that it actually does happen; that is you actually have forgotten your MyNSFAS login details, and at the same time lost your cell phone, there is still a last resort.

You can get back your account by submitting a certified affidavit, as well as a letter requesting that your email and cell phone number be updated. You are required to provide the old phone number as well as the new one, and that applies to your email as well. The affidavit should be sent to uds@nsfas.org.za.

After manually reviewing your request, the NSFAS authorities will respond via the new email. This procedure may take some time.

Conclusion:

You are encouraged to take care of your NSFAS details so that you do not have to go through the stress of updating your details via an affidavit. While checking your NSFAS statement/account balance, please ensure that your application has been approved first. if you are unable to check the balance then it probably means that your application has not been approved. If your application has not been approved then you may need to review your details and file an appeal. We have a post on the procedure.
