NSFAS Addresses Whether NSFAS Allowances Will Be Increased
NSFAS has recently had to clear the air as fake messages have been circulating concerning what they offer students. This comes as everyone awaits an announcement from NSFAS about 2022 bursary applications.
No, students will not be receiving an increase in allowances and a car allowance. Fake messages seem to be reaching new proportions and sadly, they give students hope. Now, NSFAS has had to set the story straight.
A fake NSFAS circular was making the round which promised students the following:
- Meal allowance increased to R2100
- Book allowance increased to R6500
- Private accommodation allowance increased by 8%
Even more astounding was the promise that students with results with an average of 60% and above will receive a car allowance “to buy their own car”.
To this, NSFAS responded saying:
If you receive or see a message/post such as the one in this image regarding NSFAS allowance increase for the 2022 academic year, please note that it is FAKE.
The financial aid scheme then said that they would communicate if there are any changes to the NSFAS funding rules.
Currently, NSFAS provides students with learning material, accommodation, meal, and transport allowances. The NSFAS bursary also covers your tuition and registration fees.
NSFAS applications for 2022 are yet to open with NSFAS saying delays are due to them making improvements to their systems.
Students are urged to report any suspicious messages or calls from fraudsters posing as NSFAS staff to the Vuvuzela Hotline on 0860 247 653
