NSFAS is no longer funding Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses in 2022 which began in the 2022 academic year. This includes postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, honors degrees, and master’s and Ph.D. degrees.

Students who received financing in 2022 for one of the NSFAS-funded postgraduate qualifications will be able to complete the program in 2021 with the same funding.

The funding program is a policy choice made by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), according to Sibongile Mncwabe, NSFAS Chief Corporate Services Officer. NSFAS only provides financial support for the acceptable qualifications listed in the policy standards, says Mncwabe. NSFAS does not give funding for PGCE in 2021, according to the DHET Bursary Rules and Guidelines.

Therefore, there will be no NSFAS Application for PGCE in the 2022-2024 academic year Fundings.

National Research Foundation (NRF) Programme: NSFAS PGCE Funding 2022

Students seeking support for postgraduate studies should contact the National Research Foundation and submit an application (NRF). For application deadlines in 2022, go to www.nrf.ac.za.

Approved funds for university programs are all undergraduate entire qualifications offered by a public university, according to the requirements. Postgraduate qualifications, such as postgraduate certificates, diplomas, honors degrees, master’s degrees, and Ph.D. degrees, are not financed, with the exception of continuing academically eligible students who complete their degrees after 2022.

Mncwabe stated that NSFAS will no longer be funding first-time entrant students for PGCE. However, students who are already enrolled in this program will be allowed to complete the qualification. According to NSFAS, in 2020 there were 4047 students doing their PGCE.

NSFAS has made payments to all institutions whose registration data has been received. The funding scheme will communicate when the 2022 application cycle commences. A petition has been started to get NSFAS to fund PGCE students in 2022.
